Spotlights on Türkiye – A Key Partner in Europe’s Future Logistics Strategy
– By Turgut ERKESKİN – FIATA SVP, GENEL TRANSPORT CEO
The last couple of years have been challenging for the global logistics industry. We have experienced major developments that have dramatically changed the face of the global logistics industry. First, we have seen how the pandemic disrupted global supply chains and led to changes in trade patterns. It has accelerated the trend toward e-commerce and lastmile delivery, which is expected to continue in the long term, creating potential growth opportunities for the logistics industry.
The pandemic has also accelerated the adoption of automation and digitization in logistics operations and highlighted the importance of sustainability and environmental responsibility -to such an extent that it is safe to say these two topics sustainability and digitization – will continue to be the focus of investments for logistics companies in the future.
While global economies had showed a gradual recovery in the post pandemic process, this time the rising tension in global politics continued to cast a shadow of uncertainty on the global supply chains. The Russian-Ukrainian war coupled with the sharp rise in energy costs has forced Europen countries to look for alternati e routes and solutions to manage supply chain risks, resulting in an increasing focus on Türkiye as a logistics partner.
A Nearshoring Hub for Europe
Driven by both geopolitical and economic factors, Türkiye has traditionally been an important hub for trade and transport for both Europe and the Black Sea region. With the recent developments in the region, while expanding its economic ties with neighboring countries such as Russia, Romania, Ukraine, and CIS markets; it has also reinforced its position as an important nearshoring market for Europe.
Türkiye is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, making it an ideal location for companies looking to serve both markets. Having a population of over 80 million people, it is also a growing domestic market with a significant customer base for companies looking to sell their products locally. The country has a young and skilled workforce, with a high level of education and technical expertise. All these advantages make it an attractive location for European companies looking to relocate their production facilities or restructure their supply chains with diversified modes and routes.
In terms of the transport and logistics sector, Türkiye has a well-developed and competitive environment, with a range of providers offering a variety of services. It has a modern and extensive transportation infrastructure, including ports, airports, and highways, which are connected to neighboring countries and major markets. Türkiye has also been investing in infrastructure projects to improve connectivity with the Black Sea Region, Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. In recent years, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (also known as the New Silk Road) has played an increasingly important role in global trade, and Türkiye is one of the key partners in this initiative. Thanks to its unique position as a gateway to Europe for Chinese goods, the country has been actively working to develop transport and logistics infrastructure to support this trade.
The logistics industry in Türkiye has also undergone significant modernization and digitalization in recent years, with many providers offering sophisticated technology solutions such as warehouse management systems, transportation management systems, robotic systems and real-time tracking and visibility tools.
Overall, the transport and logistics sector in Türkiye is well-equipped to support the needs of companies looking to ramp up nearshoring production facilities in the country or establish a presence in the region and take advantage of opportunities presented by Türkiye’s good connectivity and wide range of services and infrastructure available to support efficient and cost-effective transportation and logistics operations.
